In 1921, a small chapel was built to meet the needs of the growing population of Mexican migrant farmers. Under the supervision of St. Boniface in Anaheim, the chapel was named “Manzanillo” in memory of their own country. Supervision of the chapel fell to a number of parishes as the county grew. It shifted to St. Hedwig, then Blessed Sacrament then St. Columban’s, and then to St. Barbara’s until it was established as "Mision de Lourdes" in 1972 when Msgr. Pedro Yrigan was appointed administrator. In 1985 it became Our lady of Lourdes Parish. Fr. Bill Barman succeeded Msgr. Yrigan and continued to expand parish services, but the ministry remained focused on the Spanish speaking population, especially recent arrivals.

In the year 2000--as the demographics of the area began to change to include many Vietnamese Catholics--a new parish was established to integrate the small Our Lady of Lourdes into a larger community under the patronage of Our Lady of La Vang, the site of an apparition of the Virgin Mary in Vietnam. Soon, the small church hosted one daily Mass in Vietnamese each week. Meanwhile, land was acquired for the purpose of building a new church in a more suitable location.
Vào năm 2000, nhiều người Việt về tụ họp sinh sống chung quanh khu giáo đường nhỏ, nên một giáo xứ mới lớn hơn được thành lập dưới tên mẹ La Vang; và dự án xây giáo đường Đức Mẹ La Vang trong khu vực được chấp thuận.
In 2004, Fr. Joseph Son Nguyen, just back to the diocese after several years of graduate studies, was named pastor and was assigned the task of overseeing the construction of Our Lady of La Vang Church. The new pastor expanded services in Vietnamese and English while keeping services to the Spanish speaking community an integral part of the new parish. Soon, a Spanish speaking Deacon, Rigoberto Maldonado, was ordained to help Fr. Joseph care for the parish.
Năm 2004, Cha Giuse Nguyễn Thanh Sơn, sau khi tu nghiệp tại Berkeley, California, được Đức Giám Mục Tod Brown phái về cai quản giáo xứ mới; và dưới sự hướng dẫn của cha công trình xây cất bắt đầu. Cộng đồng người Việt và Người Mễ cùng mướn một hội trường lớn kế khu vực xây cất để cử hành Thánh Lễ. Nhân sự của giáo xứ biến dạng từ đó.
Groundbreaking for the new church was held on December 17, 2004. In July 2005, the new community rented the Plumbers and Steamfitters hall near the construction site and began celebrating Sunday Mass in anticipation of the new Church. Trucks, cranes, and construction teams began work in earnest in October 2005, and by August, 2006, all major works were completed. On August 13, the last day of services in the rented hall, Bishop Jaime Soto led a procession with a statue of Our Lady of La Vang from the hall to the new church, officially putting losure to an era. The new Our Lady of La Vang Church was dedicated in a multilingual Mass by Bishop Tod D. Brown at 10:00AM on August 20, 2006. Many thousands continued to celebrate throughout the day in different languages, signaling a new era for the new community. The latest count put the number of weekend Mass attendees at around 4,000. Services are held in Spanish, English, and Vietnamese. There are nearly 300 children in bilingual religious education, and 80 teenagers in Confirmation preparation. Over 500 active families have officially registered in the new parish; and the number grows each week.
Thánh Đường Đức Mẹ La Vang được hoàn tất vào ngày 12 tháng 8, năm 2006; tượng Đức Mẹ La Vang được rước từ hội trường vào thánh đường ngày 13, và Đức Cha Tod Brown đã thánh hiến giáo đường ngày 20 tháng 8, nhân dịp Giáo Hội tại Việt Nam mừng lễ kính Đức Mẹ La Vang.
Cho đến nay, giáo xứ có khoảng 4000 người dự lễ mỗi cuối tuần. Thánh lễ gồm cả ba thứ tiếng Việt-Mỹ-Mễ. Khoảng hơn 300 em học sinh giáo lý và thêm sức sinh hoạt mỗi tuần. Các ban ngành và hội đoàn sinh hoạt thường xuyên dưới tước hiệu Đức Mẹ La Vang.
